Two bodies of missing hikers found, a third in critical condition

On 6/12/2017, three individuals who had gone camping in Northern Trinity County, were reported missing by out of the area family members. The family members indicated that the individuals had left to go camping on 6/5/2017, and had not been seen or heard from since that time.

Family members were able to provide a location of the campground and an associated vehicle; however, no further information.

A Deputy confirmed that the missing individuals and their associated vehicle were not at the campground. The Deputy attempted to utilize the cellular telephones associated with the individuals to obtain a possible location of the three; however, no locational information, recent past or present was available on the telephone records.

The Deputy requested additional units to assist in searching local area trailheads, and a search of the trailheads ensued. During the early morning of 6/13/2017 (darkness), a Deputy located the associated vehicle (unoccupied) near a trailhead in the Trinity Alps Wilderness Area.

The Deputy sounded his air horn and called out on his Public Address system, but was unable to hear any individuals in the immediate area who responded. Due to the darkness, the Deputy was unable to search the wilderness for the missing individuals, and therefore began to prepare a Search and Rescue mission to be launched at first light on 6/11/2017.

During the morning of 6/13/2017, the above referenced three were located in the Trinity Alps Wilderness, by Trinity County Sheriffs Office Search and Rescue Members. Two of the individuals were deceased, appearing to have succumbed to exposure, while the third was medically evacuated to an area hospital. The third individual remains in stable condition.

The names of the two deceased shall not be released until the investigation is complete, while the third shall not as they're a juvenile.

Two large truck loads of trash consisting of beer bottles, rotten food, chemicals, human fecal matter, old clothing, stacks of rotten lumber and other miscellaneous trash were removed. Crews also removed vegetation and river rock in an attempt to rehabilitate the area back to its natural state.

Two subjects who were camping in the area were contacted. One was cited for illegal camping on county property and disposing waste. The other was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.

The trash deposits and camp sites were along the banks of Weaver Creek well within the high water mark of the creek. All items removed were considered dangerous to the environment, native fish and wild animals that inhabit the area, and children who play nearby at Lowden Park and the Trinity Little league field.
